An HVAC technician’s brain should be loaded with information, in addition to a willingness to be on top of his or her game. Do you have what it takes?

According to an online database of HVAC schools, technicians should possess all of the following qualities:

1. Knowledge of technical data, systems and controls, and testing equipment.

When you go on service calls, you’re the sole representative of the company and the source for answers. Understanding schematics, blueprints, all types of heating and cooling systems, and the equipment you work with will help make your job easier and make you the expert.

2. Ability to troubleshoot.

As an HVAC technician, it’s important to know what to do on the spot — it will improve your customer service, and help you determine what a customer needs when you’re on the job site.

3. Interest in advanced training.

Growth is important for technicians, but a want for growth is even more impressive. A step further would be if you took training on your own through continuing education or simple webinars.

So, if you aren’t up to par, are you up for the challenge?

The first step is proper training — if your company isn’t invested in a program, suggest one that provides convenient and affordable HVAC training. Or, for a refresher course, elearning classes are available.
