An average HVAC technician makes a $40,000 to $50,000 salary — and that doesn’t take into account his or her skill level.
So how do you set yourself apart to attract the best HVAC technicians? Salary? Other incentives? I’ve gathered a few time-honored tips from successful heating and cooling companies that helped them recruit the best.
1. Money talks — sometimes.
Of the many factors as to why a technician takes the job, salary is definitely one of them. However, it isn’t the end-all-be-all. Company environment, other incentives, and location are among the other biggest factors potential technicians look for when investing in a company. Of course, you shouldn’t expect to pay your technicians the bare minimum. Good employees don’t come cheap.
2. Training matters.
Good HVAC technicians are also looking to learn something new and be part of a team that they can grow with. Invest in HVAC training programs that all your employees, top to bottom, benefit from.
3. It’s who you know.
Attend conventions, seminars, and talk to your biggest competitors. You never know who might be looking for a job next, and it’s a good idea to keep a database of HVAC technicians you’ve networked with. This will help prevent a mass search that might cost you more money for mediocre results.
